Restaurants Manhattan New York offers

If there is anything to say for New York it’s that restaurants change even more often than in London… It means that every time I make my way state side, I research. I book in advance and I pray that there is still availability. Needless to say, it’s a lot of work. So that you can go forth without the extra bother, here is a list of restaurants Manhattan has to offer with an alternative for each one if you cannot get a booking.

Sushi Seki

A high high end sushi place, this one is not for the fainthearted or weak wallets. You are talking new versions of every single old fish… fancy and yummy. We sat at the sushi counter where the Japanese chefs prepared our omakase (chef selection). No soy needed. Very similar to Jewel Bako which when I went moons ago was super refined and intricate.

Jungsik

By far the best new find, this is a high end Korean restaurant. Forget kimchi. Forget barbecued meats that are oily and drenched in garlic. This kind of food is represented by delicate uni (sea urchin) rice and a beautiful octopus salad. And for those of you who don’t like uni… well take it from me, it was superb. My all time favorite? Their sweet potato tart for desert. I can only compare it to Momofuku Ko though Jungsik is definitely on another level in terms of sophistication .

Perla

Perla is a yummy and piggy Italian with fun drinks to boot. What more could a girl ask for? Well a bigger restaurant so that we could all get a table easily. Similar to Perla? Probably Carbone which is just as difficult to get a table at if not more… No one said it was easy in New York City…just saying…

Hotel Americano

This was one of my ultimate favorite brunch places of recent memory… With a live orchestra, some piggy options as well as relatively healthy ones and a bloody mary to kill for… well need I say more? Oh yes. There was many bloody maries. Numerous. I did not struggle for a table but if you want more brunch options in the Chelsea neighborhood I recommend Cookshop or the Park. Otherwise in the same neighborhood Co. is pretty awesome for a new age and relatively healthy pizza.

Abc Cocina

I feel that for those of us stuck on the wrong side of the pond (that would be brit based folks), good Mexican is really super hard to come by. It’s a sad fact of life that we must all live with. We cry. We sulk. But we get our fill when in NYC. Abc Cocina is a really fun and buzzy mexican restaurant that may be a bit of a challenge to get a table at… I also really like Barrio Chino which has awesome drinks and a no reservations policy. Get there early folks!

The Eddy

Really a gem of a little lower east side place, the Eddy is perfect for a low key dinner with a group of friends. It’s also quite close to Mayahuel which is, now we all know, a great place for a boozy lady like me. Book early as this small locale fills quickly. If you can’t get a table try Prune, a no reservation place for local foodies.

Barbuto

Ok. I must admit I was quite inebriated for this one but I will attempt to remember everything, or well, the basics! My first thought was that because they kept the walls which consist of garage doors open I was quite cold. Ok, I was freezing. I think they put an end to this when it gets colder. On that night I dealt with it by drinking! Right. The highlights were their crazy amazing chicken roast and delicious gnocchi. I vaguely remember a kale salad being… well healthy. I am not sure how difficult tables are to come by as I did not make the booking but I recommend Supper which does not take bookings if you cannot get in.

Maison Kayser

Last but not least and indeed first, if you are looking for a nice breakfast spot, Maison Kayser really hit the spot. With eggs, patisseries and even a salad on offer as well as several locations throughout Manhattan, it provides a nice start to whatever kind of day. If Kayser is not your vibe, the Mercer Kitchen is always a great breakfast alternative.
